Malcolm Brown (b.1931)

A nationally recognized watercolorist, Brown has been working and teaching in the Cleveland area throughout his career. Working in soft colors with a loose stroke, Brown's work is at times abstract and at other moments evocative of scenes of city life. He has had several solo exhibitions in Ohio, and other states including West Virginia, Kansas, Georgia, North Carolina, and has been included in many group exhibits. His public commissions have occurred nationally. Brown is a member of the American Watercolor Society since 1973 and a charter member of the Ohio Watercolor Society. Although he is especially stimulated by the unending challenges of watercolor he has used acrylic paints and mixed media. He and his wife, Ernestine have brought local and nationally recognized African American artists to the attention of this region through the Malcolm Brown Gallery that was established in 1980.
