Soldiers & Sailors Monument

Soldiers and Sailor's Monument sculptor and architect, Levi Schofield.(b.1842-d. 1917)

This imposing and artistic monument reflects pride in the military. All the decorative details are taken from military emblems. On the sides of the surrounding esplanade are four massive pedestals supporting four realistic bronze groups of the four branches of the service: Infantry, “The Color Guard” (an actual incident as Captain Levi Scofield, architect and sculptor, saw it;) Artillery, “At Short Range”; Cavalry, “The Advance Guard;” and Navy, “Mortar Practice.” No materials are spared including black granite column, bronze bands carrying the names of thirty of the most prominent battles of the Civil War. and many other aesthetic details. The story of the placement on Public Square is worth researching. The monument speaks for itself as an example of the literalness of Victorian art.
