Cleveland Market, Frederick C. Gottwald (b1858-d1941)

1881

-Cleveland Academy of Art incorporated. Western Reserve School of Design for Women established to prepare women for jobs in local industries. By mid 1880’s men are admitted as well. Incorporated as the Cleveland School of Art in 1891, it became the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1948.

1882

-Art Students League established in Cleveland.


1883

-Cleveland Academy of Art publishes the periodical The Sketch Book, which lasts a little more than a year.


1885

-Frederick Gottwald returns from Munich and begins teaching at Western Reserve School of Design and remains on the faculty until retiring in 1926. Dies in 1941.


1887

-Cleveland Camera Club established. Reorganized as Cleveland Photographic Society in 1913.


1890

-Built as a tomb and memorial to President James A. Garfield, the Garfield Monument is completed.

-The Arcade opened; compared with GalleriaVittorio Emanuelle in Milan, Italy. Charles Schweinfurth architect of many of Cleveland’s finest residences, churches, educational buildings 1890 – 1915. Died in 1919
